For all the construction jobs, the vital things to be considered are Fall hazards and lifting operations. Because the construction works will have the Work at height in most cases, so making the stuff like, Standard Scaffolding and having controls on the heavy equipment are the essential things to be given attention. So, in this page of  Safety Advices we shall look about the things to be included in the Daily Inspection Check List for the heavy equipment namely Crane.

Competency:

The competency of both the equipment itself and the competency of the Crane operator are the ultimate things to be checked. Before starting the operation of the Crane, all the documents related with the competency of both the equipment and the crane operator should be submitted to the Safety Officer and one copy of all the documents should be present in the Crane itself. In addition to the certificates, the load test for the Crane should be done at the working site before starting the lifting operation.



Automatic SWL Indicator should be in working condition:

The electronic device namely SWL ( Safe Working Load ) Indicator which is installed inside the Crane operator cabin should be inspected in daily basis to make sure that the device is working and the alert when the SWL is exceeded is working.

Visual Inspection on Sling Drum and Sling:

Sling drum is one of the vital things to be checked by daily basis because the Sling is used in each and every lifting activities by the Crane but as all of the sling are hidden inside the drum and due to the scratching of the sling with itself / with the wall of the drum and others, there is a fair chance for the sling to get damages when the time passes. So it is necessary to have a visual inspection on the sling by daily basis.

Safety Latches of all the Boom hooks are not damaged and in working conditions:

Even though the lifting hook of the boom are been given glance by everyone of the lifting crew, it is mandatory to have the Safety latch of the boom to be maintained without any damages and with good working condition. Because if the Safety Latch is not perfect, then the chance for the load to get slip with the lifting belt which fastened with the load is high.

Presence of Load Chart inside the Crane Operator's Cabin:

Load chart of a Crane is nothing but a graph which is having the length of the boom in the x axis starting from 1m to the maximum length of the boom in its complete extended level. This chart will be helpful for the Crane operator to know the strength of the boom at any point of his lifting operation with the hanging load on it.

Visual inspection on oil leaks:

The leak can be a hydraulic oil leak / engine oil /  break oil or else. These oil leaks can cause for either Fire hazard or Environment hazards. So all the monitoring gauges for the oils in the Crane must be checked daily basis.

All lights working condition:

All the lights including head lights, reverse alarm lights, load focusing lights and all other lights are working properly.

Spart Arrestor:

The safety device in crane namely Spark Arrestor should in place in the Crane and it should be in working condition. So it is mandatory to check the Spark Arrestor in daily basis.

Except all the above mentioned factors, there can be other factors like checking the brake system, movement of the crane, boom and other factors shall be included in the daily inspection check list of Safety.
